Renault Clio II (1998 – 2012)

Reliability score : 6.5/10

The Renault Clio II is a landmark B-segment supermini that enjoyed massive European success and a remarkably long production run. Launched in 1998 (Phase 1), it received a major, high-quality facelift in 2001 (Phase 2), a minor update in 2003 (Phase 3), and continued as the budget-friendly 'Clio Campus' or 'Storia' from 2006 until 2012 alongside the Clio III. In South America, heavily modified versions (Clio Mio) were produced until 2016. While petrol engines are generally robust, the diesel lineup represents a tale of two eras: the older, virtually indestructible naturally aspirated engines, and the introduction of the 1.5 dCi common-rail turbo diesel. The early 1.5 dCi engines are infamous for catastrophic high-pressure fuel pump failures, making buying a used diesel Clio II a minefield

🎯 Verdict

The Renault Clio II is a brilliant, comfortable, and cheap-to-run supermini, but buying an early diesel version is highly risky. The 1.5 dCi (65/80 hp) from 2001 to 2005 is plagued by the infamous Delphi pump 'limaille' issue, which can total the car financially. If you must buy a diesel, look for a late-model Clio Campus (post-2006) where the injection system was improved, or find a slow but indestructible 1.9 D. Honestly, for the age of these vehicles, the petrol engines (especially the 1.2 8v or 1.2 16v) are vastly superior choices for reliability and peace of mind.
