The Renault Austral (JRA) replaces the Kadjar and marks a spectacular move upmarket for the diamond-badged manufacturer. Based on the CMF-CD platform (shared with the Nissan Qashqai III and Renault Espace VI), it stands out with a high-quality interior finish, the integration of the OpenR Link multimedia system (based on Google Automotive), and the introduction of the 4Control Advanced four-wheel steering system. Mechanically, Renault has chosen to completely abandon diesel in favor of micro-hybrid powertrains (12V and 48V) and a new E-Tech Full Hybrid powertrain based on a new 1.2-liter 3-cylinder turbo engine. Although recent, the model shows a very reassuring reliability record, driven by the excellent 1.3 TCe and rigorous design, despite some initial software bugs on the E-Tech version
The Renault Austral is an excellent surprise and completely erases the mixed memory of the Kadjar. Well-designed, it benefits from a modern platform and an interior that sets a benchmark in the mainstream category. In terms of reliability, the record is very positive. Buyers seeking absolute peace of mind should opt for the 1.3 Mild Hybrid (140 or 160 hp), whose 4-cylinder engine is currently one of the most reliable on the market. The E-Tech Full Hybrid version is brilliant in its fuel consumption but requires ensuring that all software updates have been performed to guarantee optimal driving pleasure. A highly recommendable purchase.
