The Renault Austral (internal code JRA) was introduced in 2022 as the direct successor to the Kadjar. Riding on the CMF-CD platform shared with the Nissan Qashqai, it represents a massive leap forward for Renault in the highly competitive compact SUV (C-SUV) segment. It introduces a highly praised interior featuring the OpenR Link infotainment system (powered by Google Automotive), vastly improved material quality, and the optional 3rd-generation 4Control Advanced (four-wheel steering). Mechanically, Renault ditched diesel entirely for this model, offering only Mild Hybrid (12V and 48V) and Full Hybrid (E-Tech) powertrains. The Renault Austral is a highly successful reinvention of Renault's compact SUV formula. It completely erases the blandness of the Kadjar with top-tier technology, a premium-feeling cabin, and sharp styling. From a reliability standpoint, the 1.3 Mild Hybrid (140/160) is the absolute safest bet; it is a mature, bulletproof engine that will serve you well long-term. The 1.2 E-Tech Hybrid is brilliant for fuel economy, but its complex dog-clutch transmission and heavy reliance on software make it a slightly riskier long-term proposition out of warranty. If buying an E-Tech, ensure it has a full dealer service history with all software updates applied. Avoid 20-inch wheels if ride comfort is a priority.
