The Polestar 2 (Generation I, phase 1) is the first mass-production model from the Swedish manufacturer (a subsidiary of Volvo and Geely). Based on the CMA platform (shared with the Volvo XC40), this 100% electric fastback sedan is positioned as a direct rival to the Tesla Model 3. It distinguished itself by being the first vehicle in the world to natively integrate the Android Automotive OS infotainment system. Although its build quality and road handling are praised, the early model years (2020-2021) suffered the teething problems of an immature software architecture. Note: This sheet covers the 2020-2023 period (FWD or AWD models). The major facelift of the 2024 model year (switch to RWD for Single Motor versions) is not included here.
The Polestar 2 is an excellent European alternative (although manufactured in China) to the Tesla Model 3. It appeals with its design, practical tailgate, and native Google interface. Mechanically, the CMA platform and electric motors are robust. However, the reliability of this first generation is marred by recurring electronic problems, in particular the infamous TCAM module (loss of network/keys) and the HVCH heater. Buying advice: Avoid 2020 models if possible, as they are often prone to teething problems. Favor a 2022 or 2023 model, ideally in the Long Range Single Motor version for the best range/price compromise. Ensure that the vehicle has received all its updates and that the heater works perfectly during the test drive.
