Peugeot 407 I (D2) (2004–2010) (2004 – 2010)

Reliability score : 7.0/10

The Peugeot 407, launched in 2004, succeeded the highly acclaimed 406. It marked a stylistic turning point for the lion brand, with its pronounced front overhang and gaping grille, giving it a dynamic and distinctive look. Available as a sedan, station wagon (SW), and coupé, it was positioned in the family and executive car segment. The 407 was renowned for its suspension comfort, sound insulation, and rigorous road handling, a legacy of Peugeot tradition. A minor facelift occurred in 2008 (Phase 2), bringing minor aesthetic changes (bumpers, taillights) and engine evolutions, particularly in diesel. Overall, the 407 offers good value for money on the used market, but its reliability can vary considerably depending on the engine and maintenance history.

🎯 Verdict

The Peugeot 407 is a car with character and offers excellent comfort for its used price. However, its reliability verdict is nuanced and highly dependent on the chosen engine and maintenance history. BUY if you opt for the 2.0 HDi (136, 140 or 163 hp), which is by far the most balanced and reliable engine in the diesel range. Ensure a complete maintenance history and rigorous monitoring of the DPF and dual-mass flywheel. The 2.0i gasoline versions are also a reasonable choice for less intensive use. NEGOTIATE strongly and with caution if you are considering a 1.6 HDi 110 hp or a 2.2 HDi 170 hp. The 1.6 HDi can be a good deal if its maintenance history is impeccable and known weaknesses have been preventively addressed. The 2.2 HDi bi-turbo offers good performance but can lead to high repair costs in case of supercharging system failure. A thorough inspection by a professional is essential. AVOID the 2.7 HDi V6 and the 3.0i V6 unless you have a very substantial maintenance budget and a perfect understanding of the risks. These engines, though pleasant, are complex and their repairs can be exorbitant. In all cases, prioritize a model with an up-to-date service book and invoices, and
