The third-generation Peugeot 308 (P51 for the sedan, P52 for the SW station wagon) marks a major turning point for the lion brand. Inaugurating the new Peugeot emblem, it is based on a deep evolution of the EMP2 (V3) platform, allowing for total multi-energy (petrol, diesel, mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and 100% electric). Positioned at the edge of the premium segment, it stands out with a sharp design, significantly improved finish quality, and a spectacular interior (i-Cockpit with i-Connect Advanced). However, while road performance is excellent, the reliability record is mixed, hampered by the legacy of the 1.2 PureTech (wet belt) and 1.5 BlueHDi engines, although the recent arrival of the new 1.2 Hybrid engine with a timing chain changes the game.
The Peugeot 308 III is an extremely attractive car, offering road performance and a level of presentation worthy of the upper segment. However, the choice of engine is absolutely crucial. If you are looking for a petrol version, avoid the classic 1.2 PureTech 110 and 130 hp (wet belt) unless you have a solid warranty and impeccable maintenance. Imperatively favor the new 1.2 Hybrid 136 hp (MHEV) version, which appeared in late 2023, equipped with a timing chain, which finally reconciles the 308 with mechanical reliability. The PHEV (180/225) and electric (e-308) versions are good choices, although expensive, provided you can put up with the electronic quirks of the multimedia system.
