The Peugeot 208 II (P21) is a B-segment supermini built on the Stellantis CMP (Common Modular Platform). Introduced in 2019, it won the European Car of the Year award in 2020 thanks to its striking exterior design, high-quality interior featuring the 3D i-Cockpit, and the availability of multi-energy powertrains (petrol, diesel, and fully electric) from launch. A mid-cycle facelift was introduced in late 2023, bringing the new Peugeot shield logo, updated light signatures, and new 48V mild-hybrid powertrains. While highly successful commercially, its reliability record is mixed, heavily dependent on the chosen powertrain. The 1.5 BlueHDi diesel, while exceptionally frugal, requires strict maintenance and vigilance regarding its emissions systems and camshaft chain.
The Peugeot 208 II is a highly desirable supermini that wins hearts with its design and driving dynamics. However, buying one requires extreme caution regarding the powertrain. If you are targeting the 1.5 BlueHDi diesel: It is a fantastic highway cruiser with unbeatable MPG, but you must ensure it has the upgraded 8mm camshaft chain (or budget for its replacement) and be prepared for potential AdBlue system headaches. Avoid using the diesel for short city trips. For petrol buyers, avoid the older PureTech engines unless the belt has just been replaced, and aim for the post-2023 48V Hybrid models with the timing chain. The e-208 is a solid urban EV, provided the OBC and AC compressor have been checked.
