Peugeot 208 II (2019 – 2025)

Reliability score : 5.5/10

The second-generation Peugeot 208 (codename P21) is a true commercial success in Europe, driven by its bold design (light-up fangs, rear light strip) and futuristic interior (3D i-Cockpit). Based on Stellantis' CMP platform, it offers an excellent compromise between comfort and dynamism. Although this report focuses on the 1.5 BlueHDi diesel engine, it is crucial to note that the 208's engine range has been plagued by serious reliability issues with its European internal combustion engines (PureTech petrol and BlueHDi diesel). The late 2023 facelift brought new chain-driven hybrid powertrains to address the petrol side, but the diesel has been progressively withdrawn from many European catalogs.

🎯 Verdict

The Peugeot 208 II is a captivating car with a striking design, but its thermal engine reliability record is heavily marred by Stellantis' technical choices. Regarding the 1.5 BlueHDi: it's a double-edged sword. While it is exceptionally fuel-efficient and pleasant on the road, its fragile AdBlue system and especially its undersized camshaft chain (7mm) make it a risky purchase. Buying advice: Only buy a 1.5 BlueHDi if it is a recent model (produced after March 2023) factory-equipped with the 8mm chain, or if the seller can provide proof of invoice that the chain kit has been replaced with the reinforced version (including the new housing). Avoid diesel models used exclusively in the city. If you are looking for a reliable 208, turn to the new 1.2 Hybrid (chain-driven MHEV) versions that appeared in 2024.
