The Peugeot 206 Phase 2 (introduced in Spring 2003) is the facelifted version of Peugeot's best-selling supermini. It features updated aesthetics (clear headlight lenses, redesigned taillights, body-colored bumpers on most trims) and a modernized interior. Crucially, this generation fully integrated PSA's multiplexed electrical system (VAN/CAN bus), which brought new features but also early electronic gremlins. While its chassis remains highly praised for its agility and driving dynamics, the 206 Phase 2 was starting to show its age in terms of crash safety and driving position by the end of its run. It remains a highly accessible, cheap-to-run used car, provided buyers are aware of its specific mechanical quirks.
The Peugeot 206 Phase 2 is a brilliant, cheap-to-run supermini that still looks good today. However, it requires a vigilant buyer. The absolute priority is checking the rear axle; a bad axle turns a cheap car into an expensive headache. For petrol buyers, the 1.4i 8v is the sweet spot if the head gasket has been replaced. For diesel buyers, the older 2.0 HDi 90hp is legendary for its durability, whereas the 1.6 HDi 110hp should be avoided unless it comes with a flawless, high-frequency service history. Avoid the AL4 automatic gearbox entirely.
