PEUGEOT 206 (1998 – 2012)

Reliability score : 6.5/10

The Peugeot 206 is one of the most successful European cars in history, with over 8.3 million units produced worldwide. Launched as the successor to the legendary 205, it revolutionized the B-segment with its sharp, feline styling and excellent chassis dynamics. Available in multiple body styles including a 3-door and 5-door hatchback, a practical SW (estate), and the popular CC (Coupé-Cabriolet) with a folding hardtop. In 2001, the 206 transitioned to a multiplexed electrical architecture, which modernized its features but introduced early electrical gremlins. In 2009, it was heavily facelifted and sold as the '206+' in Europe to serve as a budget alternative alongside the newer 207.

🎯 Verdict

The Peugeot 206 is a modern classic that democratized sharp handling and stylish design in the late 90s and 2000s. Today, it serves as an excellent first car or cheap daily commuter, provided you buy the right version. The 1.4i petrol and 2.0 HDi diesel are the picks of the bunch for longevity. However, buyers must be extremely vigilant regarding the rear axle condition and electrical gremlins (COM2000). Avoid the 1.6 HDi entirely. If you find a well-maintained example with a healthy rear axle, it represents fantastic value for money.
