Opel Zafira B (2005 – 2014)

Reliability score : 7.4/10

The Opel Zafira B (based on the Astra H platform) marked a major evolution compared to the first generation, retaining the brilliant Flex7 retractable seating system while improving finish, road handling, and safety. Restyled in early 2008 (new bumpers, modified taillights, updated engines), it established itself as one of Europe's most popular compact MPVs. Although sales were dominated by diesels (1.9 CDTI then 1.7 CDTI), petrol engines now offer a very relevant alternative on the used market, avoiding costly DPF and EGR valve problems. Overall reliability is decent, but marred by electronic weaknesses (CIM module) and the notoriously fragile 6-speed manual gearbox (M32) on certain versions.

🎯 Verdict

The Opel Zafira B is a pragmatic and affordable family MPV on the used market. While diesels flooded the market, they are now aging and prone to serious breakdowns (DPF, EGR, M32 gearbox). The smartest choice is to opt for a petrol engine, especially the 1.8 VVT 140 hp, which offers the best balance of reliability, power, and maintenance cost. Absolutely avoid the 2.2 Direct (Z22YH), whose high-pressure pump failures are ruinous. When purchasing, meticulous attention must be paid to the onboard electronics (horn/CIM) and, if the vehicle is equipped with a 6-speed gearbox, to bearing noises.
