Opel Zafira B (2005 – 2014)

Reliability score : 6.8/10

The Opel Zafira B (second generation) consolidated the success of its predecessor by adopting the brilliant Flex7 retractable seating system, while modernizing its chassis (based on the Astra H) and its engines. Restyled in 2008, it continued its career under the name 'Zafira Family' until 2014, even after the release of the Zafira Tourer C in 2011. While its spaciousness and road handling are excellent assets, its overall reliability has been marred by fragile peripherals in the era of strict anti-pollution standards (DPF, EGR valves) and by the notoriously problematic 6-speed manual gearbox (M32).

🎯 Verdict

The Opel Zafira B is a family minivan brilliant in its interior design, but its diesel reliability record is heavy. The 1.9 CDTI 150 hp, though very pleasant, is a nest of costly problems (swirl flaps, M32 gearbox, alternator). If you absolutely must buy a diesel, favor the 1.9 CDTI 120 hp (8 valves, without swirl flaps) or the late-production 1.7 CDTI, provided the gearbox has been rebuilt and your use is mainly on the open road. For maximum peace of mind, the 1.8 VVT 140 hp gasoline versions are by far the best used car choice.
