🎯 Verdict

Final Verdict The Opel Astra L is a beautifully designed, well-handling hatchback that is let down by the legacy baggage of its Stellantis powertrains. Regarding the 1.5 Diesel: While it is a superb engine to drive—offering punchy torque and incredible fuel economy—it is difficult to recommend unconditionally. The risk of the camshaft chain failure and the fragility of the AdBlue system mean you should NEGOTIATE heavily. Only buy a used 1.5 Diesel if it comes with a comprehensive warranty, has a flawless service history, and ideally has proof that the upgraded 8mm camshaft chain housing has been fitted. If you want an Astra L, the smartest money is on the newer 1.2 MHEV (136 hp) with the timing chain, or the fully Electric version, both of which bypass the major mechanical flaws of the older ICE lineup.
