Nissan X-Trail IV (T33) (2022–2025) (2022 – 2025)

Reliability score : 7.2/10

The fourth-generation Nissan X-Trail (code name T33), also sold as the Nissan Rogue in North America (since 2020/2021), marks a spectacular move upmarket for the Japanese manufacturer. Based on the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance's CMF-C/D platform, it stands out with a highly refined interior, the option of 7 seats, and the introduction of e-Power technology in Europe. Unlike traditional hybrids, the e-Power system uses the combustion engine (a 1.5L 3-cylinder with variable compression) solely as a generator to power the battery and the electric motors, which alone drive the wheels. Although very accomplished in terms of drivability, this model raises questions regarding the long-term reliability of its highly complex variable compression combustion engine (VC-Turbo), particularly in i

🎯 Verdict

The Nissan X-Trail T33 is an extremely accomplished family SUV in terms of comfort, technology, and perceived quality. However, the choice of engine is absolutely crucial. We strongly advise against purchasing the direct-drive 1.5 VC-Turbo versions (163 hp MHEV in Europe, or 201 hp in North America) due to the complexity of the variable compression and the ongoing US federal investigation regarding catastrophic engine failures (connecting rod assembly). On the other hand, the e-Power versions (204 and 213 hp) are highly recommended: since the combustion engine only serves as a generator at a stabilized speed, it is spared from destructive mechanical stress. Therefore, exclusively favor the e-Power for a worry-free purchase.
