The eighth-generation Nissan Sentra (B18), also known as the Sylphy in Asian markets, marks a spectacular break from the previous generation (B17). Gone are the anonymous design and subpar dynamic performance: the B18 adopts lines inspired by the large Maxima sedan, a significantly more rewarding interior with very comfortable "Zero Gravity" seats, and a new platform incorporating a multi-link independent rear suspension. Positioned in the highly competitive compact sedan segment (C-segment), it does not aim for the sportiness of a Honda Civic or the hybrid efficiency of a Toyota Corolla (in North America), but establishes itself as a rational, comfortable offering with an unbeatable price-to-equipment ratio. Not sold in Western Europe (where Nissan favors SUVs and EVs), it is a best-selle
The Nissan Sentra B18 is a highly recommendable choice, which deserves a BUY verdict. Nissan has learned from past mistakes: the naturally aspirated 2.0L mechanics are robust and the CVT transmission, once the brand's Achilles heel, has been made considerably more reliable. Although the list of NHTSA recalls may seem long, these are mostly minor assembly defects covered by the network, and not major powertrain design flaws. It is a rational sedan, extremely comfortable, economical to run, and offers a price/quality ratio often superior to its direct rivals (Civic, Corolla) on the used market. The only condition to guarantee its longevity is to perform a CVT gearbox oil change every 60,000 km.
