Nissan Rogue III (T33) (2021 – 2025)

Reliability score : 6.8/10

The third-generation Nissan Rogue (T33), marketed as the X-Trail in Europe and Asia, marks a significant move upmarket compared to the previous generation (T32). It stands out with a more spacious cabin, a marked improvement in finish, and the successful integration of the ProPilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system. While the CVT transmission has been revised to correct the severe overheating problems of the past, this generation undergoes a major mechanical transition: the abandonment of the robust but aging naturally aspirated 2.5L 4-cylinder (only offered in 2021 in North America) in favor of an all-new 1.5L VC-Turbo (variable compression) 3-cylinder from 2022 onwards. Although praised by J.D. Power for its initial quality, this new engine is accumulating heavy recalls (NHTSA) conce

🎯 Verdict

The Nissan Rogue (T33) blows hot and cold. On paper and in use, it is an excellent family SUV: spacious, comfortable, technologically up-to-date, and equipped with an excellent ProPilot system. J.D. Power even ranks it above average for its initial quality. However, long-term reliability is heavily compromised by the new 1.5L VC-Turbo engine (2022+). The complexity of variable compression causes serious mechanical problems (oil degradation, internal breakage) confirmed by major NHTSA recalls. Buying advice: Prioritize looking for a 2021 model equipped with the naturally aspirated 2.5L engine, which offers proven mechanical reliability. If you opt for a 2022 or newer model (1.5L VC-Turbo), an extended manufacturer warranty is absolutely essential, as is strict verification that all safety recalls (brakes, seats, engine) have been performed.
