The second-generation Nissan Qashqai (J11) is a pioneer and an absolute best-seller in the compact SUV segment in Europe. Based on the Renault-Nissan Alliance's CMF-C/D platform, it significantly improved its interior presentation, comfort, and technological equipment compared to the first generation. A major facelift occurred in 2017 (phase 2), bringing better sound insulation, recalibrated steering, and improved finish. While the Qashqai J11 shines with its overall balance, its career was marred by serious reliability issues with its flagship petrol engine in the early years (the 1.2 DIG-T, infamously known as 'Motorgate'). The arrival of the 1.3 DIG-T unit in late 2018 fortunately corrected the course, finally offering a highly recommendable petrol engine.
The Nissan Qashqai II is a two-faced vehicle. If you are looking for a petrol model from before 2018 (1.2 DIG-T), steer clear: the risk of engine failure is too high, and the CVT gearbox worsens the overall assessment. However, models produced from late 2018 onwards equipped with the 1.3 DIG-T engine (140 or 160 hp) are excellent choices: reliable, powerful, and well-finished. On the diesel side, the 1.5 dCi remains a safe bet for high-mileage drivers. In summary: avoid the 1.2 petrol, prioritize the 1.3 petrol or the 1.5 diesel with a manual or DCT gearbox (avoid the CVT).
