The fifth-generation Nissan Pathfinder (R53) marks a major and saving turning point for the model. Designed primarily for North America and the Middle East (it is not officially sold in Western Europe), it abandons the rounded lines of the previous generation for a more robust and boxy design. Above all, it corrects the biggest flaw of its predecessor (the R52) by replacing the infamous continuously variable transmission (Xtronic CVT) with a true 9-speed automatic gearbox (supplied by ZF). Paired with the robust, carried-over naturally aspirated 3.5L V6, this change propels the Pathfinder's reliability from "Below Average" to "Above Average" according to J.D. Power and Consumer Reports. It is a spacious family SUV (up to 8 seats), an excellent tow vehicle, and finally mechanically trustwor
The 5th generation Nissan Pathfinder (R53) is an excellent surprise and a strong comeback. By listening to criticism and replacing the fragile CVT gearbox with a traditional 9-speed automatic transmission, Nissan has transformed an SUV with questionable reliability into a highly recommendable family vehicle. The 3.5L V6 engine is a monument of reliability. Buying advice: Although the powertrain is solid from launch, the 2022 model year suffered from numerous factory assembly defects (welds, seat mountings, etc. - see recalls). It is therefore strongly advised to target a model from 2023 onwards, where these teething problems have been corrected. If you buy a 2022, demand proof that all NHTSA recalls have been performed.
