Nissan Frontier II (D40) (2005 – 2021)

Reliability score : 8.2/10

The second-generation Nissan Frontier (D40) (also known as the Navara in other markets) is a mid-size pickup with exceptional longevity. Sold for 16 years in North America with very few aesthetic changes, it has built a reputation for legendary toughness and bulletproof mechanical reliability, often outlasting its more modern competitors over the long term. Although its cabin, onboard technology, and fuel consumption betray its design age, it represents the archetype of the "old-school" utility vehicle: simple, robust, and proven. In 2020, Nissan introduced the next-generation powertrain (3.8L V6 and 9-speed automatic gearbox) into the old D40 body for the final two years of North American production.

🎯 Verdict

The Nissan Frontier D40 is an excellent used purchase for anyone looking for a robust, no-frills pickup capable of handling high mileage. Although it is less capable in extreme off-roading than a Toyota Tacoma, it is mechanically just as reliable (if not more so regarding the automatic gearbox) and costs significantly less on the used market. Buying advice: Prioritize a model equipped with the 4.0L V6 produced between 2011 and 2019. This will help you avoid the catastrophic radiator defect (SMOD) and the timing chain issues of the early years (2005-2010). The 2020-2021 models with the new 3.8L V6 are also excellent choices, offering modern mechanics in a proven body, provided the transmission recalls are checked.
