Nissan Altima VI (L34) (2019 – 2025)

Reliability score : 7.2/10

The sixth-generation Nissan Altima (L34) is a midsize sedan designed primarily for the North American, Middle Eastern, and Chinese markets. It is not sold in Western Europe. Replacing the L33 generation, it marks a technological breakthrough with the introduction of an optional AWD and, above all, the 2.0L VC-Turbo engine with variable compression ratio, a world first. Although its roominess and comfort are praised, its overall reliability remains average for the segment, held back by the reputation of its Jatco CVT gearboxes and the teething problems of its complex turbo engine. A facelift was carried out for the 2023 model year, modernizing the front fascia and infotainment.

🎯 Verdict

The Nissan Altima L34 is a comfortable, spacious, and highly frugal sedan in its naturally aspirated 2.5L version. It is an excellent choice for long trips, particularly if you opt for AWD. However, reliability remains marred by the presence of the Jatco CVT gearbox, which requires scrupulous maintenance to last. We strongly advise against buying a used 2.0L VC-Turbo version out of warranty, due to its extreme mechanical complexity and major recalls concerning internal failures. Favor a 2.5L model from 2021 onwards (to avoid first-year production recalls) with a crystal-clear maintenance record regarding gearbox oil changes.
