The second-generation Mitsubishi Outlander (chassis code CW0) was launched in 2006 and marked a significant evolution from its predecessor. Positioned in the compact to mid-size SUV segment, it shared its GS platform with other group models (Lancer, ASX) as well as with its French cousins, the Peugeot 4007 and Citroën C-Crosser, of which it is the technical basis. Recognizable by its more modern and dynamic design, it benefited from a major facelift in 2010, adopting the 'Jet Fighter' grille inspired by the Lancer Evolution X, as well as interior improvements and new engines. The Outlander II stands out for its versatility, often offering a 5+2 seat configuration, a high-performance all-wheel drive (AWC - All-Wheel Control), and a good compromise between ride comfort and light off-road cap
The Mitsubishi Outlander II is a versatile and generally reliable SUV, provided you choose the right engine. The gasoline versions (2.0, 2.4, 3.0 V6 MIVEC) are the most recommendable for their robustness and low preventive maintenance costs. They offer excellent durability and a certain driving pleasure, even if the V6s are thirsty. In contrast, the 2.0 DI-D of Volkswagen origin is to be absolutely avoided due to its serious and costly structural problems. The 2.2 DI-D diesels (PSA and Mitsubishi) are more acceptable choices, but require rigorous DPF and EGR maintenance. For family and versatile use, the gasoline Outlander II represents an excellent used car deal. If a diesel is imperative, prioritize the 2.2 DI-D Mitsubishi (after 2010) or the 2.2 DI-D PSA with a clear maintenance history. Scrupulously check the recall history, especially for Takata airbags. A well-maintained example, especially a gasoline one, will offer many years of reliable service.
