The first-generation Mitsubishi ASX (GA) (known as RVR in Japan/Canada and Outlander Sport in the United States) is a compact SUV that enjoyed an exceptionally long career (12 years). Based on the GS platform shared with the Outlander, it benefited from no less than four major facelifts (2012, 2016, 2017, 2019) to stay competitive. While it eventually showed its age against more modern competitors (dated finish, imperfect soundproofing, lagging infotainment), it built a reputation for rock-solid reliability, particularly in its gasoline versions. It's a pragmatic, rational, and reassuring purchase for anyone looking for a robust vehicle capable of racking up miles without complaint, with the added benefit of offering excellent all-wheel drive (AWD) transmissions on some versions.
The first-generation Mitsubishi ASX is the archetype of a rational vehicle. If you're looking for the latest technology or a luxurious interior, look elsewhere. However, if your absolute priority is long-term reliability, the gasoline versions (1.6 MIVEC in FWD, or 2.0/2.4 MIVEC in 4x4) are excellent choices. These naturally aspirated engines with timing chains are virtually indestructible. The only imperative is to ensure that the automatic CVT gearbox (if equipped) has been rigorously serviced. We strongly advise against diesel engines, especially the in-house 1.8 DI-D, whose DPF and oil dilution problems ruin the vehicle's economic balance.
