The third generation of the modern MINI Hatch (F56 for the 3-door, F55 for the 5-door, and F57 for the Convertible) marks a massive leap forward in terms of reliability and build quality compared to its predecessor (R56). Built on BMW's UKL1 platform, it introduced the modular B-series engines (B38 3-cylinder and B48 4-cylinder), finally leaving behind the problematic Prince engines. The F56 is larger, more refined, and features a significantly upgraded interior while retaining the brand's signature 'go-kart' handling. It received two major updates (LCI in 2018 and LCI 2 in 2021) which modernized its technology and aesthetics.
The F56 generation is the car that finally made the modern MINI a reliable purchase. By adopting BMW's modular B-series engines, the catastrophic timing chain and oil consumption issues of the past are gone. While early 2014-2015 manual 1.5T models should be approached with caution due to crankshaft issues, anything from 2016 onwards is a highly recommended buy. The Cooper S (B48) offers the best balance of performance and reliability. Always check the upper engine mount, as it is the only consistent weak point across the petrol range.
