The MG4 (marketed under the name MG Mulan in China) dropped like a bombshell on the European electric vehicle market. Based on SAIC Motor's new MSP (Modular Scalable Platform), it stands out with its RWD architecture (rear motor), ideal weight distribution (50:50), and dynamic road handling, all at an unbeatable price. While its dynamic qualities and price/range/equipment ratio are praised by critics, the MG4 suffers from a few early production flaws, mainly related to its software interface (sluggish infotainment, intrusive driving aids) and some assembly issues in early production. However, it benefits from a reassuring 7-year or 150,000 km manufacturer warranty. Overall design rating: 8/10 - An excellent mechanical and electrical foundation, held back by software tuning that leaves room
The MG4 is an extremely rational choice for anyone looking for a high-performance electric vehicle with good range, without breaking the bank. Mechanically and electrically, the MSP platform is solid, and the battery (whether LFP or NMC) shows no signs of premature degradation. However, the user experience is often marred by unfinished software (bugs, annoying driving aids) and a few early production flaws (reduction gear leak, vibrations). Buying advice: Favor a recent used model (late 2023 or 2024) where the early flaws have been corrected at the factory, or ensure that a 2022 model has received all its software updates and mechanical fixes at the dealership. The 64 kWh Luxury version is the best compromise thanks to its heat pump and fast charging.
