The Mercedes-Benz SLK (R171) is the second generation of the famous compact roadster with a retractable hardtop (Vario-roof) from the brand with the star. Inspired by the design of the SLR McLaren supercar (notably its arrow-shaped nose), it corrects the dynamic flaws of the first generation (R170) by offering a stiffer chassis, more precise steering, and more noble engines (V6 and V8). It also introduces the Airscarf innovation (neck-level heating), extending the convertible season. A facelift (Phase 2) occurred in 2008, bringing aesthetic tweaks, slightly more powerful engines, and, above all, the correction of major early defects on the V6 blocks. It is a future collector's item, but the choice of year and engine is crucial to avoid astronomical bills.
The Mercedes SLK R171 is a fantastic roadster, offering an ideal compromise between comfort, style, and open-top driving pleasure. However, buying a Phase 1 model (2004-2007) is a minefield due to timing issues on the 4-cylinder (M271) and the catastrophic balance shaft defect on the V6s (M272). Our advice: Imperatively target a Phase 2 model (post-2008). The V6s (SLK 280/300 or 350) from this period are made reliable and offer the best driving experience. If you opt for a 200 Kompressor, demand invoices proving the recent replacement of the timing chain. Finally, the SLK 55 AMG is a masterpiece of mechanical robustness, provided you can handle its maintenance budget.
