The first-generation Mercedes-Benz SLK (code name R170) revolutionized the roadster segment upon its release in 1996 thanks to its electro-hydraulic retractable hardtop ('Vario-Roof'). Based on the shortened platform of the C-Class (W202), it offers an ideal compromise between the comfort of a coupe and the pleasure of a convertible. Facelifted (Phase 2) in February 2000, it benefited from aesthetic improvements, the introduction of ESP as standard, a 6-speed manual gearbox, and the arrival of the V6 engine (SLK 320). Although its road handling is more 'Grand Touring' oriented than purely sporty (uncommunicative recirculating ball steering), its overall mechanical reliability is excellent. The main enemies of the R170 today are corrosion and the aging of the roof's hydraulic seals.
The Mercedes SLK R170 is an excellent choice for entering the world of classic roadsters (youngtimers). Its mechanics are of rare robustness, particularly the M111 (Kompressor) and M112 (V6) blocks. The ideal choice is an SLK 230 Kompressor Phase 2 (for the compromise) or an SLK 320 (for the nobility of the V6), obligatorily with an automatic gearbox. However, the purchase must be conditional on a rigorous inspection of corrosion and the roof's hydraulic system. A healthy example, even with high mileage, will offer you years of pleasure provided you fix the few known defects (M111 pigtail cable, K40 relay, automatic gearbox oil change).
