The Mercedes-Benz GLB (codename X247) is a compact, family-oriented SUV, positioned between the GLA and GLC. Based on the front-wheel drive/all-wheel drive MFA2 platform (shared with the A-Class, B-Class, CLA, and GLA), it stands out with its assertive cubic design, maximizing interior space and allowing for up to 7 seats (a rarity in this premium segment). Launched in 2019, it received a facelift (Phase 2) at the end of 2023, bringing 48V mild hybridization to the petrol engines, an update to the MBUX infotainment system, and minor aesthetic tweaks. Although generally reliable, it shares the strengths and weaknesses of the MFA2 platform, notably an interior finish sometimes prone to rattling noises and complex electronics requiring rigorous monitoring.
The Mercedes GLB is a unique proposition in the premium compact SUV market thanks to its cubic interior space and 7 seats. It is a generally well-conceived vehicle with proven powertrains. The 1.33L petrol engine (GLB 200) is the most rational choice for versatile family use, while the 200 d remains essential for high-mileage drivers, provided the AdBlue system is monitored. The only drawbacks are an interior finish that lacks rigor on degraded roads (rattling noises) and a DCT gearbox that is sometimes hesitant in urban driving. An excellent family choice, to be favored as a recent used car with a clear history.
