The Mercedes-Benz CLS (C257) represents the third and final generation of the brand's pioneer four-door coupe. Sharing its MRA platform and much of its interior architecture with the W213 E-Class, the C257 distinguishes itself with a sleeker, shark-nose design and a more dynamic suspension setup. A major shift for this generation was the discontinuation of the V8 engine (leaving the AMG GT 4-Door to fill that gap) and the Shooting Brake body style. Instead, the C257 focuses heavily on Mercedes' new generation of electrified inline-six (M256) and inline-four (M264) petrol engines featuring the 48V 'EQ Boost' mild-hybrid system. A facelift was introduced in 2021, bringing updated styling, the MBUX infotainment system (replacing COMAND), and a new steering wheel with capacitive touch sensors.
The Mercedes-Benz CLS C257 is a magnificent grand tourer that excels in comfort, style, and high-speed cruising. The transition to inline-six engines (M256) was a brilliant move for refinement, making the CLS 450 the sweet spot of the range. However, the heavy reliance on the 48V mild-hybrid architecture is its Achilles' heel. Prospective buyers of petrol models must ensure the 48V battery and ISG have been inspected or replaced under warranty. If buying out of warranty, a comprehensive extended warranty covering electrical systems is highly recommended. The diesel variants (especially the 400 d) are incredibly robust and arguably the most reliable choice for high-mileage drivers, provided the coolant pump recall has been performed.
