The Mercedes E-Class W212 is an excellent executive car that has restored the brand's reputation for build quality. However, its mechanical reliability is two-tiered. Phase 1 models (2009-2013) require great caution, especially the 4-cylinder gasoline (M271) and early diesel (OM651) models. The sensible and peaceful choice is a Phase 2 (2013-2016) model. In diesel, an E 220 BlueTEC (reliable OM651) or an E 350 BlueTEC (with proof of oil cooler seal replacement) are tireless mile-eaters. In gasoline, the M274 (E 200/250) and M276 (E 300/350/400) engines are highly recommended. Avoid the diesel hybrid versions, whose technical complexity leads to astronomical repair bills.
