The Mercedes-Benz E-Class W211 (Sedan) and S211 (Estate/Wagon) represents a significant technological leap over its predecessor, the W210. Introduced in 2002, it featured a sleeker, timeless design and introduced advanced systems like the Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) and Airmatic DC suspension. However, its early years (2002–2005) were plagued by severe electronic gremlins and the infamous SBC brake system failures, severely damaging Mercedes-Benz's reliability reputation. The major turning point occurred with the mid-2006 facelift (Model Year 2007). Mercedes-Benz invested heavily to rectify the W211's flaws: the problematic SBC system was entirely removed and replaced with a conventional hydraulic braking system (ABR), electronics were overhauled, and build quality was significantly im
The W211 is a tale of two cars. The pre-facelift models (2002-2006) are fraught with expensive risks—namely the SBC brakes, Valeo radiators, and early electronic glitches. However, the facelift models (2007-2009) are spectacular vehicles, representing Mercedes-Benz returning to its roots of over-engineering and reliability. Buying Advice: Avoid 2002-2005 models unless they have the M112/M113 engine AND proof of SBC replacement. Avoid 2006-2008 V6/V8 petrols (M272/M273) due to balance shaft issues. The absolute sweet spot is a 2008 or 2009 facelift model. For diesels, the OM646 (E220 CDI) or OM648 (E320 CDI inline-6) are legendary million-mile engines. For petrols, a late-model E350 or E550 is a sublime luxury cruiser.
