The Mercedes-Benz C-Class W205 generation represented a monumental shift for the brand, introducing a 'baby S-Class' design language, a vastly improved premium interior, and the new MRA (Modular Rear Architecture) platform. It shed up to 100 kg compared to its predecessor (W204) thanks to extensive use of aluminum. A major facelift was introduced in 2018, bringing updated digital interfaces, new steering wheels, and a completely revamped engine lineup featuring 48V mild-hybrid technology (EQ Boost) and new modular diesels. While it excels in comfort, aesthetics, and technology, early models suffered from interior build quality issues (creaking plastics) and some severe engine-specific faults. The petrol lineup is vast, ranging from economical 1.5L mild-hybrids to the thunderous 4.0L V8 bit
The W205 C-Class is a stunning car that brought S-Class luxury to the compact executive segment. However, its reliability is a tale of two halves. Pre-facelift models (2014-2017), particularly the C300 with the M274 engine, carry significant risks due to the wrist pin defect and interior build quality issues. Facelift models (2018-2021) are vastly superior in both technology and reliability, with the newer M264 petrols and OM654 diesels proving much more robust. If you are buying a petrol W205, aim for a 2018+ facelift model or a six-cylinder C400/C43. If you must buy an early C300, absolute verification of the engine's health or prior replacement is mandatory. Avoid AirMATIC suspension unless you have a warranty.
