Mercedes Classe B W246 (2011 – 2018)

Reliability score : 8.2/10

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class (W246) marks a major break from the previous generation (W245). Gone is the 'sandwich' floor: the W246 adopts the MFA (Modular Front Architecture) platform, shared with the A-Class (W176). This change lowers the center of gravity, drastically improves road handling, and modernizes the interior. Positioned as a premium compact MPV, it targets families looking for the three-pointed star badge with generous interior space. A facelift occurred in late 2014, bringing aesthetic touches (LED headlights), a modernized infotainment screen, and an update to the designations ('CDI' became 'd'). Overall, the W246 is a very accomplished vehicle and significantly more reliable than its predecessor.

🎯 Verdict

The Mercedes B-Class W246 is an excellent choice for families looking for a compact, spacious, and well-finished vehicle. Contrary to the sometimes capricious reputation of MPVs, the W246 boasts a very solid reliability record. For Diesel: The most rational choice is the B 180 d (OM607). Although it originates from Renault, it has been perfectly made reliable, and its maintenance cost (outside the MB network) is reasonable. High-mileage drivers will prefer the B 200 d or B 220 d (OM651) for their highway cruising ability, but will need to be vigilant about timing chain and automatic gearbox maintenance. For Gasoline: The B 180 and B 200 versions are excellent compromises, very reliable and adapted to current anti-pollution standards (LEZ). Buy with confidence with an up-to-date service history.
