Mercedes Classe A W176 (2012 – 2018)

Reliability score : 7.8/10

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class (W176) marks a radical break in the model's history. Gone is the small urban minivan (W168/W169), the W176 becomes a premium compact sedan with a dynamic design, conceived to directly compete with the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series. Based on the MFA platform (front-wheel drive or 4MATIC all-wheel drive), it attracted a younger clientele. A facelift (Phase 2) occurred in late 2015, bringing aesthetic touches, an infotainment update (Apple CarPlay/Android Auto), and a revision of designations ('CDI' became 'd'). Overall, the W176 is a reliable car, particularly in its gasoline engines (M270 family), although the interior finish quality and suspension comfort (especially in AMG Line trim) have often been criticized.

🎯 Verdict

The Mercedes A-Class W176 is an excellent choice on the used car market if you prioritize style and dynamism over practicality. Gasoline engines (A180, A200, A250) are to be preferred: they prove very reliable, pleasant for daily use, and avoid the clogging issues associated with modern diesels. The late 2015 facelift (Phase 2) is highly recommended to benefit from a better interior finish, a slightly recalibrated suspension, and a modern multimedia system. Avoid models whose 7G-DCT automatic gearbox has never been serviced. For high-mileage drivers, the A180d (Renault-sourced engine) remains a pragmatic and economical choice.
