Mercedes Classe A W169 (2004 – 2012)

Reliability score : 6.5/10

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class W169 represents the second and final generation of the brand's innovative 'sandwich floor' architecture. Designed to maximize interior space within a compact footprint while offering superior crash safety (the engine slides underneath the cabin in a frontal impact), it is a premium subcompact MPV/hatchback. A major facelift was introduced in 2008, bringing improved rust protection, upgraded interior materials, and optimized engine efficiency (BlueEFFICIENCY models). While the engines themselves are generally robust, the unique packaging makes maintenance notoriously difficult and expensive, as many routine jobs require lowering the engine subframe.

🎯 Verdict

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class W169 is a brilliant piece of engineering that is severely compromised by its maintenance costs. While the OM640 diesel engines are capable of high mileages, the packaging means that a simple €20 glow plug or €150 starter motor can result in a €1,000+ garage bill. Buying Advice: If you must buy a diesel W169, seek a post-2008 facelift model with a manual transmission where the starter motor and glow plugs have already been replaced by the previous owner. Avoid the Autotronic CVT unless it has a flawless, documented service history. For city driving, the petrol variants (A 150 / A 170) are a much safer bet than the diesels, which will suffer from DPF and EGR clogging.
