Mazda MX-5 IV (ND) (2015 – 2025)

Reliability score : 8.8/10

The fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 (code name ND) marks a brilliant return to its roots for the world's best-selling roadster. Shorter, lower, and lightened by approximately 100 kg compared to the previous generation (NC), it reconnects with the original spirit of the 1989 NA. Available with a soft top or a retractable hardtop (RF - Retractable Fastback) since 2017, it is based on a front-engine, longitudinal, rear-wheel-drive architecture. The range is divided into three unofficial phases recognized by enthusiasts: ND1 (2015-2018), ND2 (2019-2023, with a major overhaul of the 2.0L engine increasing from 160 to 184 hp and the addition of a telescoping steering wheel) and ND3 (2024+, with a new infotainment system, an asymmetric differential, and slight aesthetic tweaks). 🎯 Verdict

The Mazda MX-5 ND is a true engineering masterpiece and one of the most reliable sports cars on the market. The naturally aspirated Skyactiv-G engines are models of robustness, capable of handling high mileage without complaint, provided regular maintenance is respected. The only real drawback of this generation concerns the fragility of the manual gearbox on the 2.0L 160 hp models (2015-2016) in case of intensive use. If you're looking for a car for cruising, the 1.5L is a perfect choice, indestructible and spirited. If you're aiming for performance or track days, absolutely prioritize an ND2 version (2.0L 184 hp from 2019) which corrects the transmission's early flaws and offers a transformed engine. In any case, it's a highly recommended passion purchase, coupled with a rational choice thanks to its low running costs.
