The third-generation Mazda MX-5 (code name NC) marks a major evolution for the famous roadster. Based on a shortened Mazda RX-8 platform, it is stiffer, safer, and more spacious than its predecessors (NA and NB), although it gained a bit of weight. It introduced the option of an electrically retractable hardtop (PRHT - Power Retractable Hard Top) for the first time in 2006, which was a huge success. The NC's career is divided into three phases: the NC1 (2005-2008), the NC2 (2009-2012) which brought major mechanical (forged engine on the 2.0, revised gearbox) and aesthetic improvements, and the NC3 (2013-2015) with minor revisions (front bumper, active hood for pedestrians). Overall, it is an extremely reliable car, whose main enemies remain corrosion and neglect of routine maintenance.
The Mazda MX-5 NC is undoubtedly the most well-rounded and daily-drivable roadster of its lineage, especially in its hardtop version (PRHT). Its mechanical reliability is excellent, provided the oil level is scrupulously monitored. The ideal choice is a 2.0L Phase 2 (NC2, from 2009 onwards) which benefits from a forged engine and an improved gearbox. However, the purchase must be conditional on a rigorous inspection of the underbody: rust is the only real enemy of this car. If the chassis is sound and the drains are clear, it's a passionate purchase with no major financial risk.
