Mazda Mazda3 III (BM) (2013 – 2019)

Reliability score : 8.4/10

The third-generation Mazda3 (chassis code BM for 2013-2016, and BN for the 2016-2019 facelift) represents a major turning point for the brand. It fully integrated the 'Kodo - Soul of Motion' design language and the complete suite of 'Skyactiv' technologies (engines, transmissions, chassis, and body). Available as a 5-door hatchback and a 4-door fastback (sedan), it is widely regarded as one of the best-driving cars in the compact class. The 2016 'BN' facelift introduced G-Vectoring Control (GVC) for improved handling, better sound insulation, and interior material upgrades. While its naturally aspirated petrol engines are celebrated for their bulletproof reliability and real-world efficiency, the diesel variants have a much more troubled history. Overall rating: Excellent for petrol models

🎯 Verdict

The Mazda3 (BM/BN) is one of the smartest used-car purchases in the compact segment—provided you choose the right engine. If you opt for a Skyactiv-G petrol model, you are getting a highly reliable, engaging, and stylish car that will easily surpass 250,000 km with basic maintenance. The 2.0L petrol is the absolute sweet spot. However, the Skyactiv-D diesels should be approached with extreme caution, or avoided entirely if it's an early 2.2L model (2013-2015), due to severe and expensive engine flaws. Try to stretch your budget for a post-2016 'BN' facelift model to benefit from improved sound insulation and better ride quality.
