Mazda Mazda3 II (BL) (2009 – 2013)

Reliability score : 8.5/10

The second-generation Mazda3 (Type BL), launched in 2009 and facelifted in late 2011, builds on the excellent chassis of the first generation (BK) while correcting its main flaw: susceptibility to corrosion. Positioned as a dynamic compact, it offers a driving experience superior to the segment average thanks to precise steering and sharp running gear. While the gasoline engines (MZR and the first Skyactiv-G at the end of their career in some markets) shine with their almost irreproachable reliability, the diesel versions (shared with PSA or developed in-house) tarnish the record with costly failures. It is a highly recommendable used model, provided you target the gasoline versions.

🎯 Verdict

The Mazda3 (BL) is an excellent used compact, on the strict condition of opting for a gasoline engine. The 1.6 and 2.0 MZR blocks are models of robustness that handle high mileages without flinching, with minimalist maintenance (chain timing). The chassis is a delight for driving enthusiasts. However, the diesel versions (especially the 2.2 MZR-CD) are to be avoided due to costly design flaws (chain, DPF, oil dilution). The sporty MPS version is a collector's item in the making, but requires a clear maintenance history and a substantial budget.
