The second-generation Mazda2 (factory code DE) marks a radical break from its predecessor. Gone is the mini-MPV profile, replaced by a dynamic and sleek city car. Voted 'World Car of the Year' in 2008, it inaugurated Mazda's 'gram strategy,' showing a weight reduction of approximately 100 kg compared to the previous generation (dropping below one ton for basic versions). Sharing its platform with the Ford Fiesta Mk6, it offers particularly agile and pleasant road handling. A facelift occurred in late 2010, bringing minor aesthetic touches, improved sound insulation, and updated suspension. While the gasoline engines (Mazda design) are models of reliability, the diesel versions (borrowed from the PSA/Ford group) require much more vigilance.
The Mazda2 (DE) is an excellent used car choice, provided you exclusively target the gasoline engines (1.3 or 1.5 MZR). In these configurations, it proves to be one of the most reliable city cars of its generation, coupled with above-average driving pleasure thanks to its light weight and sharp chassis. The diesel versions (MZ-CD) are to be avoided due to their origin (PSA/Ford of that era), which brings its share of costly problems (injectors, turbo, DPF), ruining long-term economic interest. Opt for a facelifted model (post-2010) to benefit from better sound insulation and a slightly revised finish.
