The Mazda2 (DE) is an outstanding used car buy, provided you stick to the petrol engines. It embodies Mazda's 'zoom-zoom' philosophy with a lightweight, agile chassis that makes everyday driving genuinely fun. The 1.3 and 1.5 MZR engines are virtually bulletproof if given basic maintenance. However, the diesel variants (1.4 and 1.6 MZ-CD) should be strictly avoided due to their PSA/Ford origins, which bring a host of expensive reliability issues (turbos, DPFs, injector seals). Accept the cheap interior plastics and high road noise, and you will be rewarded with one of the most dependable and engaging superminis of its era.
