Mazda 3 (2013 – 2019)

Reliability score : 7.5/10

The third-generation Mazda 3, internally designated as the BM series (2013–2016) and the facelifted BN series (2016–2019), marked a significant leap forward for the brand. It fully integrated Mazda's 'Kodo: Soul of Motion' design language and the complete suite of 'Skyactiv' technologies (chassis, engines, and transmissions). Available as a 5-door hatchback and a 4-door sedan (Fastback), it is widely praised for its engaging driving dynamics, premium interior feel, and the outstanding reliability of its naturally aspirated petrol engines. However, it is also known for subpar sound insulation in early models and severe reliability issues with its larger diesel engine.

🎯 Verdict

The Mazda 3 (BM/BN) is a tale of two cars. If you buy a Skyactiv-G petrol model, you are getting one of the most reliable, stylish, and best-driving compact cars of its decade. It is a highly recommended purchase. However, if you are looking at the 2.2 Skyactiv-D diesel, it is a vehicle to avoid entirely due to a litany of expensive and catastrophic engine failures. Opt for a post-2016 facelift (BN) petrol model to get the best combination of reliability, improved sound insulation, and modern tech.
