Kia Sportage IV (QL) (2015 – 2021)

Reliability score : 7.6/10

The fourth-generation Kia Sportage (code QL) marks a major evolution for the Korean manufacturer. Sharing its platform with the Hyundai Tucson (TL), it stands out with a bold design (front end inspired by the Porsche Macan style), significantly improved interior finish quality, and more dynamic road behavior than its predecessor. Launched in late 2015, it received a facelift in 2018 which introduced new engines (replacement of the 1.7 CRDi by the 1.6 CRDi 'Smartstream') and mild hybridization (48V MHEV) to meet Euro 6d-Temp standards. Overall, it is a very well-rounded compact SUV, backed by the famous 7-year manufacturer's warranty. However, its reliability record is very mixed depending on the geographical area: while European engines are generally robust (despite some weaknesses with th

🎯 Verdict

The Kia Sportage IV (QL) is an excellent choice in Europe, where its engines (1.6 GDi, 1.6 T-GDi, 2.0 CRDi) prove reliable and durable, especially with a manual or torque converter automatic gearbox (6-speed automatic/8-speed automatic). The DCT7 gearbox requires particular attention during the test drive. In contrast, for the North American market, Theta II engines (2.4L and 2.0T) pose a major financial and safety risk; they should be avoided unless a lifetime warranty is confirmed in writing by the manufacturer. Prioritize a post-2018 European model (facelift) with the 1.6 GDi for city driving, or the 2.0 CRDi for high-mileage drivers.
