The third-generation Kia Rio (codename UB) marks a major turning point for the Korean manufacturer. Designed under the guidance of Peter Schreyer, it abandons the low-cost appearance of its predecessors for an assertive European design, a significantly improved finish, and rich equipment. Positioned in the B-segment (versatile city cars), it shares its platform with the Hyundai i20. A mid-life facelift occurred in late 2014 / early 2015 (redesigned bumpers, updated multimedia system). Highly praised for its 7-year manufacturer's warranty (now expired for this generation), it particularly shines with the reliability of its naturally aspirated gasoline engines, which are the focus of this report.
The Kia Rio III (UB) is an excellent used car choice if you target the naturally aspirated gasoline engines (1.25 and 1.4 CVVT/MPI). These engines, though not particularly powerful, shine with their robustness and timing chain, offering rare peace of mind in this segment. The North American 1.6 GDI requires more rigorous monitoring (fouling). Diesel versions (CRDi) are to be avoided except for high-mileage extra-urban drivers, otherwise significant costs (DPF, EGR) may arise. Despite a somewhat firm ride and basic plastics, it's a rational, economical, and very reliable city car in its gasoline variants.
