Kia Rio III (UB) (2011 – 2017)

Reliability score : 8.2/10

The third-generation Kia Rio (internal code UB) marked a major turning point for the Korean manufacturer. Designed under the direction of Peter Schreyer, it abandoned the insipid look of its predecessors for a dynamic and European design. Launched in 2011 and facelifted in early 2015, it stood out for its generous interior space, rich equipment for its category, and the famous 7-year manufacturer's warranty. Although this report focuses on diesel (CRDi) engines, which were very popular in Europe at the time for their fuel efficiency, the Rio was offered with a multitude of gasoline engines worldwide. Overall, it is a very reliable model, but diesel versions require a suitable driving profile to avoid costly breakdowns related to emission control.

🎯 Verdict

The Kia Rio III is an excellent versatile city car on the used market. If you are targeting a diesel (CRDi), caution is advised: avoid models that have been used exclusively in the city. The 1.4 CRDi 90 is clearly preferable to the 1.1 CRDi 75, both for driving pleasure (4 cylinders) and versatility. Ensure that the service history is clear and that the vehicle has regularly driven on highways to preserve its DPF and EGR valve. However, unless you drive more than 15,000 km/year on extra-urban journeys, gasoline engines (1.25 or 1.4 CVVT) remain the most rational and reliable choice for this model.
