Kia Rio II (JB) (2005 – 2011)

Reliability score : 7.8/10

The second-generation Kia Rio (JB code) marked a major turning point for the Korean manufacturer, abandoning the small estate car look of the first generation to adopt a classic versatile city car format (available in 5-door hatchback and 4-door sedan depending on the market). Sharing its platform with the Hyundai Accent (MC), it stands out with a very aggressive price/equipment ratio and generous cabin space. The model benefited from a facelift in late 2009, bringing aesthetic touches ('Tiger Nose' grille, new bumpers) and a slight improvement to the interior. Although its road handling and sound insulation were behind European benchmarks of the time (Clio III, Peugeot 207), it compensates with very satisfactory overall mechanical reliability. 🎯 Verdict

The Kia Rio II (JB) is a pragmatic and economical choice on the used market. If you target the 1.5 CRDi, you'll get a surprisingly lively city car capable of venturing onto the motorway without hesitation thanks to its 110 hp. However, this diesel engine, although equipped with a robust timing chain, requires a clear service history. Avoid examples that have been used exclusively in the city (risk of clogged EGR and worn turbo). If the history is unclear, prefer to negotiate the price down to anticipate an intake cleaning or peripheral replacement. For purely urban use, you should definitely opt for the 1.4 or 1.6 petrol versions, which are certainly less torquey but indestructible if the belt is up to date.
