The Kia pro_cee'd (ED generation) is the 3-door version of the Cee'd compact sedan. Designed in Frankfurt and produced in Slovakia (Žilina), it was developed specifically for the European market. It differs from the 5-door version with a lowered roofline, a more raked tailgate, and a decidedly sportier profile, while retaining the same wheelbase. Launched with the famous 7-year manufacturer's warranty (which greatly helped to reassure about its reliability), it benefited from a facelift in late 2010 (adoption of the 'Tiger Nose' grille, improved interior materials, and revised suspension settings). It is an overall very robust model, particularly with gasoline engines, which today offers excellent value for money on the used car market.
The first-generation Kia pro_cee'd is an extremely rational used car choice disguised as a sporty coupé. If you are looking for a reliable, inexpensive to maintain, and good-looking vehicle, it is an excellent candidate. Gasoline engines (1.4 and 1.6 CVVT) are absolutely to be preferred for their bulletproof robustness (chain timing) and peace of mind, despite slightly higher fuel consumption than current standards. Diesel engines (CRDi) are powerful but require a clear maintenance history and highway use to avoid costly DPF and EGR problems. Opt for a facelifted model (post-2010) for a better interior finish.
