Kia Picanto III (JA) (2017 – 2025)

Reliability score : 8.8/10

The third-generation Kia Picanto (code name JA), marketed as the Kia Morning in some Asian markets, is an A-segment city car. Based on a platform shared with the Hyundai i10, it stands out for its assertive design (especially in GT-Line trim), its rich technological equipment for the category, and its 7-year manufacturer's warranty. The model has undergone two major facelifts: a first in 2020 (introduction of 'Smartstream' engines with dual injection and an AMT automated manual transmission replacing the old torque converter automatic gearbox) and a second, very extensive one in 2023/2024 (new front end inspired by the brand's electric models). It is a vehicle renowned for its excellent overall reliability, although attention must be paid to the choice of transmission.

🎯 Verdict

The Kia Picanto III (JA) is one of the most recommendable city cars on the used car market. Its mechanical reliability, particularly with the 1.0 and 1.2 naturally aspirated engines, is almost flawless. The ideal choice is the 84 hp 1.2 MPI/DPi engine with a manual gearbox, which offers rare versatility for the A-segment. The 67 hp 1.0 MPI will be ample for strictly urban use. The main pitfall of this model concerns the automatic transmission: if you are looking for an automatic, prioritize models from before 2020 equipped with the true torque converter gearbox (4-speed AT), which is certainly thirstier, but infinitely smoother and more reliable than the automated manual transmission (AMT) introduced during the facelift.
