The second-generation Kia cee'd (code name JD) marks a major turning point for the Korean manufacturer in Europe. Designed in Frankfurt and assembled in Slovakia, it sheds the 'low-cost' image of its predecessor to directly compete with the Volkswagen Golf VII and Peugeot 308 II. It stands out with a dynamic design (by Peter Schreyer), significantly improved interior finish, and its famous 7-year warranty (now expired for this generation). The late 2015 facelift (MY2016) brought Euro 6 engines, the new 3-cylinder 1.0 T-GDI, a DCT7 dual-clutch gearbox for the diesel, and improved soundproofing. In the used car market, it is a rational and extremely reliable choice, particularly with the diesel engine (U2 engine family), which proves to be one of the most robust in its category.
The Kia cee'd II (JD) is an excellent used car choice, particularly with the diesel engine (1.4 and 1.6 CRDi). These U2 family engines are true 'workhorses' capable of high mileages without complaint, provided basic maintenance is respected. The safest choice is the 1.6 CRDi 110 or 128 hp with a manual gearbox. However, extreme caution is advised with versions equipped with the DCT7 dual-clutch gearbox (introduced in late 2015 on the 136 hp), as the reliability of its dry clutches is inconsistent. Minor peripheral defects (LEDs, steering coupling) are known and documented, which avoids unpleasant surprises. It is a formidable and often cheaper alternative to a Golf VII or a 308 II.
