The "UN" generation Kia Carens (often referred to as the 3rd generation internationally, or 2nd generation in Europe if the RS model is considered a mere facelift) marks a turning point for the Korean manufacturer. Sold under the name Kia Rondo in North America, this compact MPV abandons the raised estate look of its predecessors to adopt true MPV proportions (available in 5 or 7 seats). While it does not shine with its driving dynamics or the quality of its interior plastics (very hard and prone to scratching), it stands out as a pragmatic, spacious, and financially accessible choice. On the used market, the petrol versions (our main target here) prove to be particularly robust and constitute an excellent alternative to European MPVs often penalized by capricious diesels in urban use. The Kia Carens II (UN) is the archetype of a rational purchase. If you are looking for a spacious, reliable, and inexpensive family hauler, it is an excellent choice, provided you target the petrol engines. The 2.0 CVVT engine is the best compromise: its timing chain and proven design will protect you from costly breakdowns, at the expense of slightly higher than average fuel consumption. The diesel versions (especially the 2.0 CRDi) are to be avoided if you drive in the city, as the repair costs (DPF, EGR, flywheel) can quickly exceed the value of the vehicle. When buying, it is imperative to check the condition of the running gear (clunking noises) and ensure that the recall concerning the ABS/ESC module has been addressed.
