KGM Rexton III (Y400) (2017 – 2025)

Reliability score : 8.3/10

The 3rd generation KGM Rexton (code name Y400, also known as G4 Rexton), initially marketed under the SsangYong brand before the takeover and name change to KGM (KG Mobility) in 2022/2023, is a large 5- or 7-seater family SUV. Unlike the majority of modern SUVs that use a monocoque structure, the Rexton remains faithful to the ladder frame chassis (Quad Frame), making it a true off-roader and an excellent tow vehicle (up to 3.5 tonnes of towing capacity). It received a major facelift in late 2020 (marketed in 2021) bringing a modernized front end, a more luxurious interior, an update to its diesel engine (going from 181 to 202 hp) and a new 8-speed automatic gearbox replacing the old 7-speed Mercedes unit. It is a niche vehicle in Europe, offering an unbeatable price/performance/space rati

🎯 Verdict

The KGM (SsangYong) Rexton Y400 is an extremely rational choice for a targeted audience: those who need to tow heavy loads (horse trailers, large boats), go off the beaten track, or transport 7 people without paying the premium price of a Toyota Land Cruiser. The 2.2 e-XDi diesel engine is a success in terms of reliability, although it is penalized by the weight of the vehicle. The facelifted models (post-2021) with the 202 hp engine and the 8-speed automatic gearbox are significantly more pleasant on a daily basis. If you are looking for a dynamic SUV for city driving or winding roads, look elsewhere. If you are looking for a robust workhorse that is luxurious inside and affordable, it is an excellent used buy.
