The KGM Rexton II and Rexton W (sold under the SsangYong brand at the time) is a large traditional SUV based on a ladder frame (body-on-frame). Designed for heavy duty work, off-roading, and towing (up to 3.2 tonnes), it relies heavily on technologies licensed from Mercedes-Benz (engines and gearboxes). The 2006-2017 period covers two major evolutions: the Rexton II (2006-2012) with its massive styling, and the Rexton W (2012-2017) which modernizes the front end and introduces new diesel engines (2.0 then 2.2) to meet Euro 5 and Euro 6 standards. It is a rustic, heavy vehicle, but extremely robust if well maintained. It represents a very economical alternative to the market leaders (Land Cruiser, Pajero) for utility or family use in the countryside.
The KGM (SsangYong) Rexton II / W is a true 'tractor' disguised as a family SUV. It should not be bought for its driving dynamics, which are from another era, but for its utility capabilities. If you need to tow a horse trailer, a large boat, or drive on rutted roads on a tight budget, it is an excellent choice. Favor the 2.2 e-XDi (post-2015 Rexton W) for its drivability and modern 7-speed gearbox. If your budget points you towards the 2.7 XDi, demand a clear history regarding the injection system (injector seals replaced, healthy HP pump) and check for the absence of perforating rust on the chassis.
