The fifth generation of the Jeep Grand Cherokee (code name WL) marks a major break from its predecessor (WK2). Based on the Giorgio platform (shared with Alfa Romeo), it moves significantly upmarket with a luxurious interior, cutting-edge technologies (Uconnect 5), and the introduction of a long-wheelbase version (3-row Grand Cherokee L). The main innovation under the hood is the arrival of the 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain, which has become the sole offering in many European markets. The 5th generation Jeep Grand Cherokee (WL) is a paradoxical vehicle. On paper and behind the wheel, it is an extremely accomplished premium SUV, luxurious and formidable off-road. However, its reliability record is catastrophic for the early production years (2021-2023). The problems are not limited to annoying infotainment bugs, but affect vital safety components (suspensions detaching, loss of steering, fire risks on the 4xe). For the 4xe (hybrid) version: Buying used is a risky bet. Only consider it if the vehicle has an extended manufacturer warranty and the recall history is crystal clear and complete. For the V6/V8 versions (Import or North America): The mechanics are solid, but you will not escape the electronic and running gear issues. Favor models from late 2023 / 2024 onwards, when factory quality control began to improve.
