The Ineos Grenadier (Generation I) is a pure, hard-core off-roader, born from Sir Jim Ratcliffe's desire to create a spiritual successor to the old Land Rover Defender. Built in the former Smart factory in Hambach (France), it rests on a robust ladder frame chassis, Carraro rigid axles, and uses powertrains supplied by BMW coupled with an 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox. Designed for durability, towing, and off-roading, it positions itself against the grain of modern SUVs. Although mechanically very solid thanks to proven components, the early models suffered some teething problems related to early assembly and software bugs.
The Ineos Grenadier is a formidable tool for work and adventure. By choosing to partner with BMW for the engines (B57 Diesel and B58 Petrol) and with ZF for the transmission, Ineos avoided the trap of unreliable powertrains. The 3.0L Diesel (B57) block is the most rational choice for this 2.7-tonne vehicle: its massive torque is perfect for towing and off-roading, while limiting the damage at the pump. However, you must buy the Grenadier with full knowledge of the facts: its vague steering and weight make it a poor choice for urban or exclusively highway trips. Used buyers must absolutely verify that the early recalls (especially on the steering) have been carried out. If you are looking for a true old-school 4x4 with modern and reliable mechanics, it is a resounding YES.
